Sota Antennas #2: Kanga QRP Endfed Halfwave ATU for 15 m

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

A little bit over half a year ago (well at the very least before the UK made it impossible for small business to ship anything to the EU) I purchased a Kanga QRP Endfed Halfwave ATU. It can be used to build endfed halfwave (EFHW) antenna for 40/30/20/17 and 15 m.

Since I am successfully using a multi-band „Inverted Vee“ dipole for 40 and 20 m for my SOTA activations I decided to build an EFHW for 15 m using the just assembled ATU. The antenna length for my 15 m antenna is 7.5 m (λ/2) and the counter poise length is 1.5 m (λ/10).

I gave the antenna a first try during my activation of OE/NO-320 „Buchenberg“ on May 3rd 2026. I made two contacts (with SM5LNE and SV1AAK) and received decent reports.

Subsequently I designed a ATU holder that allows the direct mounting of the ATU to my GFK antenna mast. A dedicated RG58 cable with angled BNC connector make it real easy to connect it with any portable ham radio transceiver.
